Chapter Twelve

‘It was almost as if I wasn’t there,’ Mason was saying. She and Knox were in the car half an hour later and on their way back to Edinburgh. ‘She still has feelings for you. It couldn’t have been plainer.’

‘You’re making more of it than it was,’ Knox said. ‘She was a wee bit drunk, that’s all. And stressed. She’d only just buried her father.’

Mason gave Knox a hostile stare. ‘You mean to tell me you weren’t aware she was making a play for you, under my very nose? That’s why she was anxious to get you to the reception – to make her feelings known.’

‘You’re overreacting, Yvonne. She had one drink too many.’ Knox shook his head. ‘Susan and I are divorced, for goodness sake. She knows we’re engaged.’

Mason harrumphed. ‘That didn’t appear to make any difference today. She kissed you full on the lips when we left.’

‘It was the drink,’ Knox said. ‘Nothing else.’

‘Really? And what about Christmas, when you went down under? What did the pair of you get up to then?’

Knox raised his fingers from the steering wheel in a gesture of dismissal. ‘I was staying at Jamie’s house. She came over for Christmas dinner. Nothing happened. I assure you.’

Mason said nothing for a long moment, then placed the thumb and index finger of her right hand on the third finger of her left. ‘A year or so back I asked you if you still loved Susan,’ she said. ‘You told me you did.’

‘Come on, Yvonne. I did say that, yes. But I seem to remember saying I cared for you, too.’

‘That’s right,’ Mason said. ‘Those were the exact words you used: “cared for”. Never once – not even when we became engaged – have you told me you love me. And there’s a reason for that, isn’t there? Because you still love your wife.’

‘Look, Yvonne, I–’

Mason slipped off her engagement ring and placed it in a coin tray behind the gear stick. ‘It’s over,’ she said.

‘What?’ Knox said.

‘Our engagement. It’s over. Sorry, Jack. I’m not prepared to play second fiddle anymore. I’ve always had a feeling it wasn’t really over between you and Susan. This afternoon confirmed it.’ She paused. ‘She still loves you. What’s more, whether you realise it or not, you’re still in love with her.’

‘You understand why you’ve been brought in for questioning,’ Fulton was saying.

He and Hathaway sat facing Moira Campbell and her lawyer in Interview Room 2, and the Caerketton lecturer had just been given a formal caution.

‘Yes,’ Campbell replied.

‘Okay,’ Fulton said, then glanced at his watch. ‘For the benefit of the tape, the time is 1.20pm. Those present are Mrs Moira Campbell and her solicitor Mr Cameron Wright. Others in the room are myself, Detective Sergeant Fulton, and Detective Constable Hathaway.’

Fulton took a copy of a transcript of Campbell’s text and read it to her. ‘Two days ago, on Tuesday the 16th of July, you were interviewed at Caerketton College by Detective Inspector Knox and myself concerning Maurice Hillard.
